1947

acrylic on paper : 2009

Partition of India, which led to one of the largest human migration in history ( approximately 15 million people ) with Muslims from India moving into Pakistan and Hindus from Pakistan moving into India. This migration split, uprooted families and villages and made millions homeless. Millions more were dead due to starvation and by large scale communal violence that erupted amidst it.
This work is inspired by the photographs of partition taken by Margaret Bourke-White which appeared in Life magazine

from the sketch book..

study of an african mask: pencil on paper

I love African sculptures and ceremonial masks. We had couple of them in our home when we were in Nigeria. They were Yoruba masks and were different than this. I love this mask because it reminds me of Modigliani paintings. I am sure he must have studied masks similar to these, as they were quite a rage in Paris during that time.
